A convertible top that needs replacement is a $3,000 to $8,000 cost depending on the car. It is also one of the most commonly minimised issues in convertible listings. "Soft top shows wear consistent with age." "Minor fray noted on driver's rear corner." "Power roof operates as intended but glass has a small scratch."

These descriptions are not lies. They are carefully calibrated truths. Here is what you actually need to inspect before you buy any convertible.

The operation test

Operate the top fully, open to closed and closed to open, at least twice. Watch it move through its entire cycle. Any hesitation, any grinding noise, any manual intervention by the seller to guide it into position is a flag. A functioning power top should complete its cycle without assistance and without drama.

For hydraulic tops, listen for the pump. A healthy hydraulic pump is quiet and smooth. A struggling pump is louder and the motion is less fluid. Replacement is expensive on most cars, typically $1,500 to $3,000 for the pump and associated seals.

The water test

The most important and least performed convertible inspection is the water test. With the car at rest and the top fully closed, pour water slowly along the seam between the top and the windshield header. Ask someone to watch from inside the car.

Then pour water along each side rail where the top meets the door frame. Any water entering the cabin means the seals are compromised. Any water in the boot, footwells, or on the sills is evidence of water ingress, which causes floor pan rust, electrical problems, and mould.

Many sellers will not permit this test. A seller who refuses a water test on a convertible is telling you something.

The fabric inspection

For fabric soft tops, inspect the material closely. The perimeter seams are where failure typically begins. Look at the material on the rear quarter panels where the top folds. Check the rear window. Plastic rear windows yellow and crack over time. If the rear window needs replacement, assume the entire top needs replacement and price accordingly.

What a bad top actually costs

Complete soft top replacement ranges from $1,500 for a simple canvas top on a common car to $7,000 or more for a precision-fitted top on a Ferrari or Porsche. Hydraulic system repair varies from $500 for a minor seal replacement to $5,000 for a full pump and ram replacement. Water damage remediation is unpredictable in cost and can easily exceed the top replacement cost itself.

Price any top concern at the high end of the repair range and negotiate accordingly.
